This Ford vehicle does not share that mean features or looks with last years model other then the name. In fact the truck like appearance has been changed to offer a curvy and sleeker look much like the Ford Flex. This Ford vehicle is also sporting a new interior then before. This 2011 SUV has completely changed for the new year.

The 2011 Explorer now features many new high tech toys, but the reviews are praising the much improved room for the passengers and driver a like. This new Ford is sporting more leg room, and a much more modern interior. However, there is one down side to this all new Ford. The towing capacity is shot due to the lack or raw motor power. This Ford vehicle is no longer meant for the working class.

With a sleeker look, and an upgraded interior Ford Motor Company is expecting to see sales rise. Just keep in mind this vehicle is no longer meant for the working class, but it is perfect for any size family. Even with all those extra features this Ford’s base price is right around 28,000. However, this Ford might break your bank on gas mileage with 17 city and 25 Hwy MPG.

Make sure you check out all of your options before you buy any where, and if an SUV is not for you make sure you check out other vehicles. You can find every vehicle you need form luxury to family vehicles at any Ford dealership, and while you are there make sure you ask to see the all new 2011 vehicle line up.

The 2011 model year will be the first time ever that Ford makes the Explorer on a car based platform rather than a traditional truck chassis.  Drivers will find themselves presented with a 3.5 liter V6 that puts out 290 horsepower and is rated to tow 5,000 pounds.  However, the older Explorer equipped with a V8 could tow 7,115 pounds, so some buyers might be seeking other options.  According to Ford surveys of customer satisfaction, 5,000 pounds is plenty good enough for 80% of their market. 

The larger Ford Explorer is able to seat seven passengers and features three rows of seating.  Now that there is no longer a minivan in their lineup and the sales of the Ford Flex have been declining, Ford had to design a vehicle with three rows.  Fuel economy has been increased to an average of 20 mpg, which is amazing for a full size SUV.  Plus, drivers are really going to love the fact that the price of the 2011 Ford Explorer is actually lower than the 2010 model!

The Explorer offers you luxury inside and out, and this SUV also comes with high remarks and crash test ratings.

Over all you can’t go wrong with any of the Ford line up. All of the vehicles have been made to make your money work for you, and they are not just stopping with fuel efficiency. Ford Motor Company are pushing standards on every level in every way.

Dave Messih is an engineer at Ford Motor Company and describes curve control as a way “to reduce the vehicle speed to help you stay inside the intended path.” The technology reduces engine torque just enough to help you corner more tightly, and can reduce your vehicle’s speed by 10 mph in one second. Imagine taking a corner at 50 mph and you can feel your vehicle slipping either into the oncoming lane or the shoulder; a bit unnerving. You could tap your brakes and adjust your speed, but you are going to have to manually correct your steering direction to avoid a crash. When turned on, Curve Control will take the current traveling speed and how much the driver is intending to turn the vehicle and then adjust your speed accordingly. The actual calculations that Curve Control does is above most of our physics and calculus educations, but the technology reacts instantly so that the driver doesn’t have to adjust their steering. If you took that same corner again at 50 mph but had the Curve Control activated, you wouldn’t have to brake and correct your steering at all. Plus, the torque reduction is so subtle that your passengers won’t notice a shift in speed nor will they crush one another as they slide around the backseat from cornering too sharply!

As mentioned earlier, the feature will be standard on the 2011 Ford Explorer. Like many safety technology features, this one can be disabled should you want to go off-roading and take corners at more than safe speeds! Ford hopes that this feature will become standard on all of their North American SUV, truck, van, and crossover lineup by 2015.

Ford has struggled with public perceptions of the Explorer as being a gas guzzler, truck-like, and fuel inefficient.  The redesign to the 2011 Explorer is intended to address that with a lighter weight, greater fuel efficiency, and a sleeker and sportier design.  Major improvements include a chassis switch to the Taurus’s chassis, which is far lighter than the previous heavy pickup frame.  The shape of the new Explorer is also much more aerodynamic, which helps with the fuel economy.  Also, a very light turbocharged 4 cylinder 2 liter motor will greatly reduce the weight of the new Explorer.

The question still remains whether the redesigns are a good idea for Ford, or whether they will be enough to catapult the Explorer into the top 10 for domestic SUV sales.  However, it is certain that some type of change needed to be made in order to boost slacking sales for the Explorer.  Although popularity of SUVs overall took a hit in 2007 when gas prices rose to $3 per gallon and higher, SUVs sales have quickly bounced back.  SUVs now account for 30% of domestic automobiles sales every year with 3.5 million vehicles sold each year.

Ford Motor Co. says its 2011 Ford Explorer will have a control system that lets drivers select how much traction they want based on road conditions. Using a dial in the center of the console, drivers can select one of four modes:  Normal roads, muddy roads, snowy roads or sand. The SUV then adjusts the engine, transmission, brakes, wheel rotation speed and other systems.

For example, if a driver sets the dial to snow, the Explorer will engage traction control, use more braking and slow down the wheels. In sand, it will do the opposite, since the wheels need to keep spinning. The new system will come standard on all four-wheel-drive models of the 2011 Explorer, which goes on sale at the end of this year.

Drivers were confused by the current Ford Explorer’s Control Trac system, which allowed them to switch to high or low traction or stay in automatic, said Jim Holland, the 2011 Explorer’s chief engineer. The new system replaces Control Trac and brings together some functions that were previously separate. In the current Explorer, for example, drivers who wanted to go over sand could turn off their anti-lock brakes for a better ride, but most didn’t know that. The new system does that automatically.

This new add-on is especially great for vacationers or people that live in rough terrains.

“Ford leads the industry in top crash-test safety ratings; now we’re helping take crash protection and prevention to new levels with technologies such as our new air bag pressure sensors,” says Steve Kozak, chief engineer of Ford Safety Systems. Each Ohio Ford dealer and others, such as Beechmont Ford, are focusing on these strategies.

Ford is doing some new (and fun) tests to improve their safety technologies. Some of these tests include ramming shopping carts into the car at high speeds, or using water cannons to force vehicles to skid. The tests are part of an ongoing effort to accelerate new collision protection avoidance technologies.

The engineers are doing these tests to take thousands of impact readings that help calibrate sensitivity of airbag pressure sensors being introduced in the new F10 and 2010 Taurus. The engineers want to be sure that a basketball from a neighbors yard won’t trigger the airbag. If the sensors can disregard minor collisions, they’ll have a step in the right direction.

Safety features are one of the top ten reasons why Ford buyers chose their vehicle, such as the Ford Explorer, according to the 2008 New Vehicle Customer Study. More than fifty percent of Ford buyers indicated that safety features are “extremely important” in their decision to purchase a Ford vehicle.

Ford announced that it will be opening three new power plants before the end of the year in order to expand its line of EcoBoost engines. EcoBoost is Ford’s brand name for an engine technology package that optimizes engine efficiency through turbocharging, direct fuel injection and variable camshaft timing.

Scheduled for production in the US are a 2-liter 4-cylinder for the next generation of Explorer S.U.V. and the Edge, and a 3.5-liter V-6 for the F-150 pickup truck. All three engines will replace larger engines and will reportedly provide similar or enhanced performance, while reducing emissions and improving fuel economy.

Of course, efficient power is a universal goal of the world’s automakers, but Ford has been diligently selling the virtues of smaller, more advanced engines to American drivers. Ford plans to eventually make EcoBoost engines available in 90 percent of its North American nameplates and 80 percent of its brands worldwide.
